Dundalk 1st XV Vs Donaghdee 26/10/2013

Dundalk travelled north on Saturday to face Donaghadee in the All Ireland Junior Cup. In previous campaigns Dundalk have failed to make their mark on this competition but were looking to change their fortunes this time out. Dundalk entered the game on the back of a 100% league record to date and were full of confidence going into the game. The rain
and win welcomed the Mill Road men in Donaghadee but they were bolstered by the large travelling support who made themselves heard throughout the match.

Dundalk started off well and playing with the wind pegged the Ulster men in their own half with clever kicking from halfbacks Thomas Campbell and Jonathan Williams. In fairness both teams struggled with the conditions but Dundalk had the better of the early exchanges and were awarded with this early dominance with two well struck penalties from full back Ultan Murphy. But as the first half progressed Donaghadee worked their way back into the match. Indiscipline from Dundalk allowed the home team to work their way up the field and eventually they kicked a penalty to pull the score back to 6-3. This gave them confidence and it wasn’t long before they were back in Dundalk’s 22. After a series of scrums in which Dundalk were under huge pressure, Donaghadee were awarded a penalty try which was converted. This left the score 10-6 at half time.

Dundalk faced a mountainous task in the second half, playing into the elements and they had also lost influential second row Paul Meegan to injury. At the break player/coach Ene Faatau refocused his troops about the task in hand and forwards Coach Kenny Dorian give his troops a good rollicking. It seemed to do the job as the Dundalk pack came out of
the traps flying. The scrums tightened up and the work rate rose with the front five of Conor Williams, Jonathan Gray, Robert Farrell, Chris O’Hanlon and Mike Bentley getting on top of their opposition. This allowed out-half Williams to boss procedures and put the Ulster men under pressure.

Again the pressure paid off and Murphy’s radar was on target again with another well struck penalty. It wasn’t long after that Murphy showed his nerve and added another penalty to leave the score at 12-10 with 10 minutes to go. Donaghadee responded and threw everything they had to get that vital score. It was cup rugby at its best. But Dundalk’s defence, that has only conceded one try from play this season, stood strong and defended wave after wave. Dundalk eventually turned over possession and Campbell kicked the ball out for a spirited win.

Dundalk are back to league matters next week when they face Wanderers in a top of the table clash at Lansdowne Road. Wanderers will no doubt go into the match as favourites but if Dundalk are at their best they may come home the M1 with a victory.

Team: U. Murphy, R. O’Hagan, I. Petelo, MJ McKevitt, S. Murphy, J.Williams, T.Campbell, E. Faatau, B.Hadden, J. McConnon, C O’Hanlon, P.Meegan, R.Farrell, J.Gray, C,Williams. Subs: J.Smith, D.McGuinness, M.Bentley, O.McNally, K. Lenehan.

The Club wishes Paul Meegan a speedy recovery from his injury which looks like he may miss the remainder of the season.

Dundalk 3rds XV in Navan 18/10/2013

Dundalk 3xv travelled to Navan on Friday night and despite the weather throughout that day, the rain pretty much held off for the game. Dundalk kicked the game off and immediately applied the pressure forcing a knock on resulting in a
scrum for the travelling team. From there Dundalk attacked but were just unable to get across the gain line.

Some great attacking ball from the backs saw Gerry Lawless come close a number of times but the Navan defence held out. After about ten minutes Navan had a line out on the Dundalk 22 and pulled off a well executed move to score under the posts, which they converted!

Dundalk didn’t give up and as Navan applied the pressure, Dundalks defence held up. On the fifteen minute mark a big hit by second row Bryan Crosbie was deemed dangerous by the referee and he was shown a red card, reducing the Dundalk men to 14. Navan converted the penalty leaving them 10-0 after 15 minutes.

Dundalk showed tremendous character and even when outhalf Brian Tansey went off due to injury they kept attacking the Navan line but just couldn’t score that elusive try. Dermot Laide came on at loose head for the injured Brian Igoe and kept the pressure on the Navan scrum!

As the second half started Dundalk started to once again put Navan on the back foot with some great attacking by Aaron Mulligan and Chris McGeady in the back line and by Laide and French student Vincent in the forwards. With a few minutes to go Chris Brady came on for Mike Doyle and with some amazing carries which annoyed the Navan defence and he looked to have scored Dundalk’s first try but it was held up!

This was the story of Dundalk’s night so close but yet so far for the Louth men, as the game finished up 10-0 to Navan. Dundalk can hold their heads high as they were able to keep the score so low with 14 men. Their training is starting to show along with the spirit in the squad, it’s only a matter of time before they return to winning ways!

Tag Girls Kick off their Season in Navan

Dundalk girls travelled to unexpected dry and sunny conditions in Navan RFC for their first league game of the season.Buoyed on by successs at the recent blitz in Boyne rugby club, all the teams were feeling confident going into this game.

U15s – the girls signalled their intent from the first whistle with Sophie Murtagh running in a quick try to put the stong, experienced side ahead from the get go. However Navan meant business and kept coming back at Dundalk equalling score after score. The game turned out to be a sheer battle with both sides giving it their all. Sophie Murtagh ran in a total of 7 tries, with Zoe Valentine behind her running in 3. Tries also scored by Meadhbh O’Callaghan, Libby Turnbull, Jessica Malone, Katie McGee and Shona Kelly Dundalk girls defended bravely with every girl giving it their all for their team, particularly strong defending from Siadhbh McDonnell, Jessica Malone, Libby Turnbull and Orlagh Conway. Unfortunately, It wasn’t to be for Dundalk girls in the end with Navan scoring the winning try in the last minute of the game with a score of 16-15 to Navan It will go down in tag rugby history as one of the hardest fought battles for the girls and it was hard to accept a loss after such a dedicated team effort. Every girl on the team gave it their absolute best, much to the pride of their coaches, Suzanne Flynn, Maria Cartwright and Chris Scully. Team:Jessica Malone (Captain), Meadhbh O’Callaghan, Shona Kelly, Aoife Craven, Siadhbh McDonnell, Zoe Valentine, Orlagh Conway, Libby Turnbull, Katie McGee, Siadhbh McDonnell, and Joy Quigley.

U12’s – This team were determined to record a winning score in their first league game and threw themselves into the game from the first minute of play. The very fast paced Caoimhe O’Callaghan ran in a total of 7 tries, followed by 2 each for Holly McEntegart, Deborah Malone, Eva Toal and Chloe Ticehurst. By half time Dundalk were almost ten tries ahead, but going into the second half Navan with plenty of subs with fresh legs got their game on and came back at Dundalk with gusto. Dundalk were put under huge pressure and a battle to the whistle ensued. Dundalk triumphed, holding on to their lead and the game ended 15-13 to Dundalk. All the girls gave one hundred percent and coaches Linda Valentine and Sharon Toal could not have asked for more. A great result for a talented and promising Under 12’s side. Team: Eva Toal, Caoimhe O’Callaghan, Chloe Ticehurst, Temi Fagbamila, Grace Cranny, Holly McEntegart and Deborah Malone.

U10’s – The minis were delighted to kick off their league season with a trip to Navan. With a few new players this season, it was good to see the girls work well together as a team and get stuck into the game. It was a very hard fought game with tries run in for Dundalk by Tara Herr and Lily McEntegart. Relative new starter Bronagh Hughes really got into her game and put two tries in, much to the delight of her team mates. It was a tough encounter for the Dundalk girls with no subs, all the team had to give it their all. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and they were beaten in the second half with a final score of 8-5 to Navan. Team: Tara Herr, Sophie Woulfe, Lily McEntegart, Ruth McGee, Molly Keenan, Isabel Holmes and Bronagh Hughes.

Dundalk Sharks Under 10s Edge Tough Encounter v Navan

The High Flying Dundalk Sharks Under 10s edged a very tough encounter against their Navan counterparts at Mill Road on Saturday. The Sharks were blessed with a break in the torrential downpour of the weekend and actually enjoyed excellent playing conditions with the pitch in excellent shape. The Sharks and Navan had over 30 players who were split into 3 even teams. Representing Dundalk were the Black Sharks, guided by Mini’s Co-ordinator Fergus O’Callaghan and John McDonnell, The White Sharks guided by Hugh Pheifer and team manager Jason Malone and the Silver sharks guided by Paul McEvoy and Stuart Jones.

The Black Sharks started against Navan and poor tackling and competing at the ruck lead to an early Navan try, which put the sharks on the back foot straight away. The Sharks were slow to get into gear, but gradually the likes of Eoghan Staunton and Ronan McDonnell started winning the battles up front and creating the space for some fluid passing and running play from the likes of Edward Finegan, scrum half Lorcan Ticehurst and the very pacey James O’Connor, Mark Leavy and Milo Moore.

A ding dong encounter ended up 3-3 with 2 tries from Milo Moore and 1 from James O’Connor. Match 2 was a demolition of a very talented Navan side, Eoghan Staunton was the clear the man of the match with a dominant forward display, which caught Navan cold and left them with no answers. The match ultimately ended 5-0, Dundalk’s tries coming from James O’Connor (2), Mark Leavy, Milo Moore and Eoghan Staunton.

Match 3 ended 6-5 to the Sharks and in reality was not as close as the score line suggests, with 3 late tries conceded at the death by Dundalk making the score line suggest a much closer match. Dundalk tries were scored by Lorcan Ticehurst (2) James O’Connor, Milo Moore, Mark Leavy and Ronan McDonnell. Great all round play from Eddie Finegan, Eoghan Staunton, Peter Rice and newcomer Sean Leonard also helping the cause. Great work from the Black Sharks.

The White Sharks under Manager Jason and Hugh started well in their first match going 1-0 ahead thanks to a Leo MacRuairi try. However things went from bad to worse after that with some positive play often breaking down at crucial times, combined with excellent Navan play leading to a 7-1 loss. The coaches needed to lift heads and rally the troops and they did just that. Game 2 was a ding dong encounter with the Sharks giving every bit as good as they got. The match finished 4-4 with tries for Joseph Pheifer, Luke Andrews, Leo MacRuairi and Sam Malone and the sharks were unlucky not to win. Buoyed by that excellent performance, the White Sharks tore into their Navan counterparts in the final match, going 1-0 ahead thanks to a Joseph Pheifer try. Further Sharks tries from Sam Malone, Luke Andrews, Alex
Gregory and a second from Joseph Pheifer would not be enough for outright victory, with Navan snatching a draw right at the death.

The Silver Sharks guided by Paul McEvoy didn’t have a reporter present, but all the lads gave a great account of themselves with super performances from the likes of Conal O’Callaghan, Robert Malone, Aaron McEvoy and all of the lads. The Silver Sharks gained a win, a draw and a loss from their 3 encounters.

Overall manager Jason was happy with the lads and although there is still plenty to work on the season is still shaping up to be another very successful one for the Under 10 Sharks.
