Dundalk vs Cill Dara 05/10/2013

Dundalk vs Cill Dara 05/10/2013

Dundalk hosted Cill Dara on Saturday for their third Leinster League match. The squad was full of confidence after two impressive wins over Newbridge and Enniscorthy. Cill Dara came to Mill Road looking to bounce back from their defeat to Tullow.

Again it was a perfect day for running rugby and it was hard to believe it was an October afternoon. Dundalk like previous games started off very strongly and were able to build their phases and put Cill Dara under pressure. Dundalk’s lineout and scrum was firing well, giving the team plenty of possession.  But the level of opposition had increased dramatically from previous weeks and Cill Dara brought a huge pack and a very well organised defence. Time and time again Cill Dara turned over possession and their out half, with his well educated left boot, was able to relieve pressure for the Kildare men. Cill Dara scored the first points of the match, when they were awarded a penalty on their first visit to the Dundalk half and their fullback slotted it over. This was to be story of the first half.  Dundalk played the majority of the rugby but lacked discipline and the cutting edge to break down the oppositions defence. They had a couple of penalties in the first half to open their account but Ultan Murphy was unable to capitalise. Again more ill discipline allowed Cill Dara to keep the scoreboard ticking over with two further penalties before Murphy added a fine penalty to leave the score 9-3 at half time to the visitors.

Dundalk were in an unusual position of been behind at half-time for the first time this season. The young team needed to respond as they were in a right old dogfight and respond they did. The team came out firing at half time and they produced much quicker ball to disorganise the Kildare defence. The back-row of James McConnon, Brendan Hadden, Ene Faatau and substitute Kieran Brannigan were impressively carrying the ball and maintaining possession. Eventually this pressure payed off and good work by Hadden and Mike Bentley led to Isaia Petelo making a fine break. Petelo then fed scrum-half Thomas Campbell who was in support to run in under the posts to score the try. Murphy converted to leave it 10-9 to Dundalk.  This seemed to give the Mill Road some confidence and energy but Cill Dara came fighting back and again landed another penalty to go back in the lead, 12-10. Yet Dundalk dug deep and played the majority of their rugby deep inside the Cill Dara half. They were awarded a penalty for their efforts and Murphy kicked an excellent penalty to give the lead back to Dundalk,13-12. Extraordinary this was not the end of this exciting match. With 30 seconds remaining Cill Dara were awarded a penalty just inside Dundalk’s half which they opted to have a shot at goal. Thankfully for Dundalk it landed short and they sealed their third victory. Next up is another home league match against Clondalkin next Saturday.

Under 9s Vs Boyne 6/10/2013

Dundalk U9s kicked off their season with a match against their neighbours Boyne on Sunday morning. Favourable weather conditions really encouraged some fine rugby from both teams. Dundalk fielded two teams from a very healthy squad of 25 players.

Dundalk A opened proceedings a little sluggishly and Boyne scored a couple of early tries. Dundalk finally got on their game with some surging runs from Cian McGuiness and Luke O Connell with Oisin Nash and Enda Dooley taking advantage and scoring some fine tries. The match ebbed and flowed and finally resulted in a draw.
The lads started their second game much better with twins Thomas and Liam McNamara to the fore as Dundalk took the lead early on. Some stout defending by Ryan Martin and Eoin Purton kept Boyne at bay with DD Reilly and Eamonn Donnelly scoring some fantastic tries as Dundalk ran out easy winners.
Dundalk A: Cian McGuiness, Tomas McDonald, DD Reilly, Ryan Martin, Oisin Nash, Eoin Purton, Liam McNamara, Thomas McNamara, Enda Dooley, Luke O Connell, Eamonn Donnelly, Josh Spaight.

Dundalk began their second game in a similar vein with Adam McCoy and Ewan Kelly notching up tremendous scores. Boyne mounted a comeback in the second half but resolute tackling from Donal Lavery and Theo Connolly kept them at bay.

Dundalk U 12 sharks put out two shark team’s on Friday night in their first match of the year against navan in what was billed as a training match to get the lads off to a new season and what a night it was for the boys. Perfect September conditions on a beautiful night on the first pitch and the young sharks took to their task gallantly. True to form Navan travelled with some huge lads , but the old mantra of low and hard was the bread and butter of the Dundalk game. The Metro league bekons for the chaps and this work out will serve them well . Strong running , going forward and putting the ball wide was the order of the night and all credit to both sides who demonstrated with gusto . Boyne are next up in this series of floodlit encounters , lets hope its another good exhibition of shark rugby

Under 17’s Match Report: Dundalk 5 Ashbourne 10

After a big win the previous week Dundalk faced much tougher opposition against Ashbourne in Meath last Saturday.

Dundalk got off to a bad start when a well worked move of the back of an Ashbourne scrum by the number eight released the winger to score in the corner.

Dundalk suffered a number of injuries with Morgan McLaughlin, Sean Lawless and Hugh Tiernan all having to retire early.  This upset Dundalk’s momentum and they struggled to get any real opportunities.  Stephen McGivern made a good break midway through the second half only to be stopped by the fullback with a fine tackle.

The game was very tight and it wasn’t until late in the second half that Ashbourne increased the lead to ten.  Dundalk  never gave up and Tadgh McElroy scored with a few minutes left on the clock to leave the score 10-5 at full time.

Next up for Dundalk in the North East league is a home match against North Meath on Saturday.

Dundalk U-17’s train on Wednesday at 7.30 in the Rugby Club.  They are looking for new players. So if you want to play, drop up.

Match Report: Dundalk 1stXV vs Newbridge 21/9/2013

Mill Road was the place to be on Saturday last if you wanted to see a feast of open rugby on a beautiful autumn afternoon. Dundalk kicked off their Leinster League campaign against a young Newbridge side. Dundalk started off playing a high tempo game which was a joy to behold. The tough pre season work seems to be paying dividends as Dundalk looked sharp and fit. With some players returning to the fold after a year’s sabbatical it was great to James McConnon and Brendan Hadden back in a Dundalk jersey. Isaia Petelo the new Kiwi centre looked very impressive in a backline well led by new captain Thomas Campbell.

It wasn’t long before Dundalk was on the score sheet after several phases of play and sustained pressure. Dundalk was awarded a penalty. A quick tap by Campbell and he found a gap to get the first try. Ultan Murphy added the conversion. Dundalk’s forwards were giving their backs quick ball and it was proving very fruitful. It wasn’t long before Petelo got over for his first of three tries after some good running. Chris O’Hanlon was doing trojan work in the lineout and prevented Newbridge from winning any clean ball. Hooker Johnny Gray was unlucky not to have a try when he dropped the ball over the line but got his reward for his efforts when he soon crashed over the line. Johnny Williams also managed to squeeze over the line just before half time.

The second half continued as the first with Dundalk not taking their foot off the pedal. With continued pressure Dundalk added further tries through Petelo (2), winger Owen McNally and McConnon. Dundalk emptied their bench and the fresh legs of Hadden, Conor Williams, Darren McGuinness and the Shields brothers Robert and James helped to keep the tempo up. Robert Shields helped himself to an excellent team try and Campbell added the final try to wrap up a big win for the Mill Road men. Murphy added some excellent conversions and his goal kicking will be crucial this year if the team are to improve on last season.

Hopefully Dundalk can continue in this rich vein of form but Coach Ennie Faatau and his squad will have a sterner test next week away to Enniscorthy. Newbridge were a well beaten side well before the end and will need to improve quickly or it will be a long hard season for the Kildare men. Robbie Farrell, Chris O’Hanlon, Paul Meegan and Ennie Faatau shone in the pack while out wide centres MJ McKevitt and Petelo combined very well. The 2nds kick off their league campaign also away to Enniscorthy next week.

Dundalk U-17 53 Navan B U-17 12

Dundalk U-17 got the season off to a great start with a comfortable win at home to Navan B on a beautiful sunny day. Dundalk were short a few players and had to improvise particularly in the forwards where Niall Malone made his debut as hooker and Stephen Arrowsmith started as a flanker.

However, a great start eased all concerns. From the kick off the Dundalk forwards moved into the Navan half with some good work from Dylan Quigley, Ryan Meegan and Morgan McLoughlin. After several phases they unleashed the backs where full back Cillian Quinn saw the opportunity from 40 yards out to finish in the corner to leave it 5-0 to the home team after 2 minutes.

In the tenth minute Dundalk were awarded a scrum 25 yards out. Tadgh McElroy, playing at 8, came off the back of the scrum to make ten yards before off-loading to Stephen McGivern who brushed off several tackles to touch down, leaving the score 10-0 after 12 minutes.

With 17 minutes on the clock the forwards unleashed the backs again through scrum half Oisin Duff and outhalf Aaron Quinn. This time David Durnin finished off in the corner after a lovely run down the wing to leave the score 15 -0. Evin Quigley saw a fantastic effort from the side line come off both the bar and the post but it failed to go over.

More good work in the middle of the pitch by Dundalk saw Stephen McGivern go over for his second and Dundalk’s fourth. This time Evin Quigley added the two points to make it 22-0. Navan did not give up and after some good work they managed to score just before half time to leave the score 22-5 at the break.

The second half belonged to Dundalk and Tadgh McElroy scored the first of his four tries after only a few minutes. Two minutes later Evin Quigley scored the sixth try under the posts from 20 yards out. He then added the conversation to leave Dundalk completely in control at 34-5. An injury to Cillian Quinn meant that Andrew Williams moved to full back and Keith Dorian on to the wing where he tackled hard.

In a ten minute spell Tadgh McElroy added another three tries to bring Dundalk’s total to nine. The pick of which was his third try which was a sweeping move down the wing which included some lovely running and passing from both Stephen McGivern and Stephen Arrowsmith before Tadgh scored under the posts.

Navan scored a consolation try with five minutes to go to leave the score 53 – 12 at the final whistle.

Evin Quigley had a fantastic game with some amazing catching in the line outs, great carrying and he scored a total of 13 points including four conversions.

Others to play well for Dundalk were Dylan Quigley, Alex Cahill, Aaron McGuigan and Barney McElroy.
