Coaches & parents alike commented on how the U12′s attacked and attacked , unlike the Ireland team against the Australians the week before. Run , pass tackle was the order of the day and these kids did it in plenty. Mini rugby is about running with the ball and passing it wide. We are on a great road forward . Next week will bring a trip to Virginia and there after into european cup with a clash against our metro friends , Wanderers RFC. The Bus on the 14th Dec is nearing full .

Dundalk 3rds XV vs Athboy 9/11/2013

The thirds travelled to Athboy on Sunday afternoon. Dundalk kicked the game off and put Athboy under pressure with a long kick forcing a knock on. Dundalk’s first scrum of the day set the tone for the scrums for the rest of the day as they forced Athboy back and were able to provide fast ball from the scrum. Dundalk kept piling on the pressure with great runs by centres Mike Doyle and Aaron Mulligan to create space for Gerry Lawless on the wing who caused problems for the Athboy back three.

Dundalk allowed the Athboy forwards to come into the game by giving away silly penalties allowing them to kick for touch on a few occasions. Athboy started to come into it and a lapse in concentration with a high kick resulted in them getting the first try of the day, which they were unable to convert.

Dundalk again from the kick off forced another knock on and from the resulting scrum a switch pass from Brian Tansey to Doyle opened up the Athboy defence with Doyle bumping two Athboy players to release Lawless into the corner for Dundalk’s first try.

As the game went on Dundalk’s pack put some serious pressure on the Athboy scrum with great scrummaging from Andrew Holmes, John Kerr and Steven Smyth. A pick and go from Chris Brady at the base of the scrum put Athboy under pressure, and from the resulting ruck Doyle again bounced another two players out of his away for Cathal Myles to pass to Lawless who skipped past three Athboy defenders for his second try of the day under the posts.

An Athboy lineout late in the first half saw McCabe steal the Athboy ball and allowed Dundalk to attack once again and after a few picks from the back of the ruck saw Brady stroll underneath the posts to leave the score 19-13 to Dundalk at half time.

The second half started off strong with once again the Dundalk forwards putting immense pressure on the Athboy back with numerous lineout steals from Kennedy, allowing the backs to stretch their legs and attack Athboy!

Mid way through the second half it started to get scrappy with both sides conceding a number of penalties.A Dundalk lineout saw Gavin Mullen, Myles and Tansey combine to open pull off a training pitch move to release Pearse Campbell into space and dance pass four Athboy defenders to score a try, unfortunately the referee deemed it held up.

Dundalk’s heads started to drop and started to allow Athboy come back into the game, the saving grace was some magnificent tackling by French student Vincent who put his body on the line resulting in Athboy going nowhere! With a minute to go and Dundalk feeling the effects of the big hits going in a moment of tiredness saw Athboy get a try, which thankfully were unable to convert and the game finished 19-18 to Dundalk.

Everyone played well with the pack performing well in the scrums and lineouts and the backs moving the ball well and tackling hard in defence!

Dundalk 2nds XV Vs Tullow 9/11/2013

Dundalk 2nds 44
Tullow 2nds 10

Dundalk 2nds were looking for their second win in a row on Saturday when they faced Tullow 2nds. Captain Simon Byrne had a strong team at his disposal with number eight Greg Whately making a welcome return from his American adventure. Dundalk had a huge pack out and it was great to see Bryan Crosbie starting, who was awarded for his strong performances with the thirds. The forwards dominated all day and this dominance resulted in Dundalk’s backline running riot with Robbie Shields and Joe Olaoye getting over for two excellent tries. Byrne got over before the break for Dundalk’s third try while Tullow’s only score came from a penalty.

Dundalk started the second half in the same manner and also had the comfort of emptying their experienced bench with Errol Boyle and Sam Mulligan making their return. Dundalk played some excellent and open rugby and added four superb second half tries with Laurence Steen, Michael Crawley, and Conor Williams getting a try a piece while Olaoye crossed over the line for his second try of the match. James Shields and Donal Clare shared the kicking duties and both kicked a number of conversions between them. In fairness to Tullow they stuck at it and were awarded with a converted try for their efforts. But Dundalk totally dominated and deserved their win. Byrne and Clare controlled matters all day at 9 and 10, while Crosbie, Johnny McGahon and Stephen Soraghan shone in an impressive pack. Kieran Lenehan and Olaoye were stand out performers in the backs. Club Coach Ene Faatau will be delighted with this performance and will also be delighted with the strength of depth at his disposal. Dundalk seconds face top of the table Coolmine 2nds next weekend, who are currently unbeaten.

Dundalk 1st XV Vs Tullow 9/11/2013

Dundalk 48

Tullow 20

Dundalk were looking to get to back to winning ways on Saturday when they entertained Tullow at the Mill Road. Tullow themselves were looking for their second win on the trot after a good win over Enniscorthy the week before. Dundalk were without influential player coach Ene Faatau due to injury but that didn’t stop the Mill Road men starting off the stronger. Dundalk applied pressure from the get-off and after having several phases of play were awarded a penalty which Ultan Murphy converted. This seemed to spring Tullow into action and they soon replied with a penalty off their own. Tullow built from this and soon scored a soft try down the blind when a miss-read by Dundalk’s defence allowed the Tullow winger to score in the corner but failed to add the conversion.

Unfortunately for Dundalk it sometimes seems they have to go behind before they can play their best rugby. For the remainder twenty five minutes of the first half they did this and played some of their best rugby all year. Their first try came off a set piece move when a solid scrum from Dundalk allowed Jonathan Williams to pass to Isasia Petelo who bashed his opposite number to score under the posts. Murphy converted. Dundalk added a second try soon after. After several phases of play and good running by openside Brendan Hadden and Rory O’Hagan out wide, gaps started to appear in the Tullow defence. James McConnon was able to find one of these gaps with one of his trademark runs and he got over for his first try of the day which Murphy converted again. Dundalk’s pace and tempo was causing all sorts of problems for Tullow and Dundalk’s policy to tap penalties and continue to apply pressure was awarded when from one of these penalties and after several phases of play Stephen Martin got over for their third try and Murphy added the extras again.

The second half began like the first with Dundalk continuing to play a fast brand of rugby. The Mill road men were eager to get their fourth try and the all important bonus point. This soon happened when from a lineout 10 metres from the Tullow line, Dundalk drove the lineout and hooker Johnny Gray, who had another fine display, powered over for their fourth try. Murphy failed with the conversion. Similar to the second’s game Tullow never gave up and credit must be given to how they responded. For large periods of the half they controlled possession and were able to build phase after phase. This was matched by Dundalk’s defence but it eventually gave in when they conceded a try in the corner which was converted. Dundalk were able to respond with another two tries, one from impressive McConnon and another ,an excellent try, from Stephen Murphy but yet again Tullow came back with an unconverted try of their own after laziness in Dundalk’s defence allowed Tullow to score with a huge overlap on the blind. However it was not surprising that McConnon had that final say in the match when he superbly stole a ball before diving over for his third try. Scrum-half Thomas Campbell kicked the conversion to wrap up another win in front of the home crowd. Faatau will be pleased with how his team responded to their lost the previous week and how well the lineout functioned with Mike Bentley and Chris O’Hanlon dominating. He will also be pleased with the general shape of his side. Best for Dundalk were Gray, McConnon, Hadden and the returning Stephen Martin in the pack while in the backs Williams, Petelo, Rory O’Hagan and Murphy stood out.

Dundalk are away to Coolmine this weekend.

Some exquisite passing by Ewan Kelly and Daniel Cartwright paved the way for an easy victory. Eoin Purton and Moss McDonald led the tackle count in the second match as the opposition couldn’t cope with the Shark’s physicality. In the last game, Dundalk recorded another win with Euan McArdle chipping in with a great score and a feature of the game were a couple of barnstorming runs by Enda Dooley.

Girls Tag 3/11/2013

This was their second league game of the season and they were delighted to be part of Sutton’s launch of their new girls kit and the festivities that came with it.

Under 10′s – A strong and dependable team with plenty of subs made the journey to Dublin and it was fantastic to see so many parents there to cheer on our girls. The Under 10′s started strongly with Lily McEntegart running in a try almost from the first whistle. More tries were followed by Tara Herr, Seona Halligan, and Natasha Swan. It was fantastic to see great enthusiasm from the new girls this season, Molly Keenan, Natasha Swan, Sarah Cahill, Hazel Malone and Isabel Holmes. Reliable defending as usual from Sophia Murdock, Bronagh Hughes, Ruth McGee and Sophie Woulfe. The game ended in a draw and the girls come away with a league point for their brave efforts. Superb passing and accleration in possession meant Dundalk girls were always in control of this game and at half time they had a very comfortable lead against the battling Suttonians. Dundalk defending never let Suttonians get the break they tried so hard to get and it was catch up for most of the second half for Sutton. The girls travelled in numbers and were in good spirits having worked on ball handling errors that let them down in their last encounter. The game started off fast and Suttonians were keen to record a score fast on their home turf. It was nail biting stuff from start to finish. Dundalk Sharks Under 10s Crush Greystones

The Dundalk Sharks Under 10s kicked off their Metro League in style with a convincing whitewash of Greystones RFC at Mill Road. After a tough encounter with Navan the previous fortnight which they were lucky to edge, the Sharks really
wanted to lay down a marker in the Gold section of the Metro League, hoping to set themselves up for another fantastic season. Greystones brought 2 travelling teams and the sharks split themselves into two evenly matched teams, the Black Sharks guided by Manager Jason Malone, Mini Co-ordinator Fergus O’Callaghan and John McDonnell and the White Sharks guided by Paul McEvoy, Hugh Pheifer and Dundalk team star James McConnon.

The White Sharks ran riot against their Wicklow based counterparts surging into an 8 try to 1 lead before Greystones rallied at the death to bring a bit of respectability to the scoreline. Dundalk tries were scored by Aaron McGuinness (2), Joseph Pheifer, Mark Leavy, Lorcan Ticehurst, Ciaran Tiernan (2) and Kieran McArdle. Aside from the try scorers it was a wonderful all round performance with the likes of Fiacra O’Gorman, Peter Rice, Lorcan Rice, Cillian Halpenny, Mark Leavy, Aron McEvoy, Tadhg Dunne, Eoghan Staunton all doing their bit to help the Sharks cause. Match 2 was even more of a procession for the imperious sharks, a 7-0 victory coming thanks to more great performances from those named above and tries from Eoghan Staunton (2), Joseph Pheifer (2), Aaron McGuinness, Luke Andrews and Niall Brennan. A fantastic all round team effort from the White Sharks.

The Black Sharks didn’t disappoint either, with fantastic forward play and competing at the ruck from the likes of Ronan McDonnell, Fionn Duffy, Calum Grant and Alex Gregory, being complemented by fluid passing and running play from the likes of Conal O’Callaghan, Sam Malone, Robert Malone, Brian McCahill, Milo Moore, James O’Connor and Leo MacRuairi. Also very noticeable was the increasingly influential contributions from newcomers Sean Leonard, Ben Wogan and Aaron Speight. The first encounter ended 3-2 courtesy of tries from Sam Malone, Leo MacRuairi and Ronan McDonnell. The second match was a 6-4 victory for the Black Sharks with tries scored by James O’Connor, Fionn Duffy, Sam Malone (2), Milo Moore and Leo.

Team Manager Jason was delighted with a clean sweep and more importantly believes the lads have now clicked into gear and firing on all cylinders with work in training starting to bear fruit. It bodes well for the undoubtedly tougher challenges to come.

Dundalk 3rds Vs Ballbriggan 3/11/2012

Dundalk 3rd V Balbriggan 3rd

The weekend of mix bag results continued for Dundalk RFC the third’s side faced a travelling Balbriggan side at the Mill road. It would be the side’s first home game on a crisp sunny Sunday afternoon. The squad were without their captain Cathal Myles and Bryan Crosby took charge of the side in his absence. Dundalk started the match with some solid play in the first half. Pearse Campbell showed his skill scoring an excellent try within the first ten minutes which Ray McCabe converted. McCabe added a penalty soon after. The first half continued with good work from the front row. Unfortunately, Balbriggan broke free to score a soft try in the right hand corner bringing the score line to 12-10 at halftime.

The second half would not fair much to Dundalk’s favour. Unfortunately, for the Dundalk side a combination of youth and inexperience in the squad failed to react to the increased pressure from Balbriggan and despite being strong at the set pieces Balbriggan took control too. This will not dishearten the Dundalk’s thirds who have seen consistent numbers at training and working hard each week. The improvement from week to week will surely result in more wins.

XV Squad:

1.Andrew Holmes, 2 John Kerr. 3. Steve Smyth, 4. Bryan Crosby, (C) 5. Thomas Thornton, 6. Stephan Traynor, 7. Daniel Mc Govern, 8.Gavin Mullen. 9.Grattan O’Hagan, 10.Ray McCabe, 11.Pearse Campbell, 12.Mike Doyle, 13.Rory Mc Ardle, 14.Gerry Lawless, 15.Eamonn Roe.

Dundalk 2nds XV vs Wanderers 2/11/2013

Dundalk 2nds produced an excellent team display to beat a strong Wanderers team 29-20 at the Aviva Stadim back pitch on Saturday last. Dundalk took the lead when they broke down the pitch and some excellent offloading saw outhalf Donal Clare go over to make the score 5-0. Wanderers playing into a strong wind maintained good control off the ball and forced a number of penalties and converted two to go up 6-5. Dundalk got themselves on the attack again. This time Donal Clare barged his way over beside the posts and James Shields conversion to put Dundalk ahead. Dundalk continued to attack and had an overlap outside however Clare’s crossfield kick went straight to the Wanderers winger and he raced away to put Wanderers ahead 13-12. Dundalk’s poor discipline would come back to haunt them as they received two yellow cards in quick succession through Laurence Steen and James Shields. Dundalk showed excellent commitment in defence to hold out Wanderers until half time. Dundalk managed to keep Wanderers scoreless during the sin bin periods and spent the majority of the second half on the front foot attacking and trying to get back in front.

They eventually got ahead when hard carrying by the forwards got them into the Wanderers 22 and Stephen Soraghan was the forward who got the ball down and Shields conversion put Dundalk 6 points up. Dundalk didn’t let up and went about building on their lead. They did that when Laurence Steen broke the cover to get Dundalk’s bonus point try and Robert Williams’s conversion put Dundalk 13 up with 10 minutes to go. Wanderers got a try with 2 minutes to go when their impressive winger got his second try. But there was no sign of nerves from Dundalk and they forced a late penalty which Williams converted to deny Wanderers a losing bonus point and Dundalk left with 5 points. Dundalk are now up to 3rd match against Tullow at 1pm in Mill Road this Saturday in Leinster Seconds League 1a and continue with a home
